We have just recently invested in a brand new machine for seeing beneath the surface of the back of your eyes. This OCT (ocular coherence tomography) machine is an advanced eye scan for people of all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to illustrate the different layers that make up the back of your eye. The OCT machine captures both a fundus photograph and a cross-sectional scan of the back of the eye at the same time.
It is a quick and painless way of detecting early signs of eye problems including glaucoma, macular degeneration (AMD) and many other eye conditions. These early changes are often not seen in a regular eye examination. This technology which is commonly found in large hospitals, is now available to our patients in our practice in Tiverton.
